Korea University (고려대학교) is a private research university located in Seoul, South Korea. it was established in 1905, making it one of the oldest institutions of higher education in South Korea. A. Nationality/Academic Requirements
– Freshman Students
Applicants must meet one of the two Nationality/Academic requirements below
- Both the applicant and the applicant’s parents are of non-Korean nationality. The applicant must have completed (or is expected to complete) secondary education.
- The applicant of non-Korean nationality who has completed 12 years (or more) of primary and secondary education outside of Korea.
– Transfer Students
Applicants must meet one of the two Nationality/Academic requirements below
- Both the applicant and the applicant’s parents are of non-Korean nationality : The applicant must have completed secondary foreign education and at least two full academic years (4 semesters) in a degree program at a four-year university or in an equivalent Bachelor’s degree program. Transfer students will be admitted as junior (third-year) students.
- The applicant of non-Korean nationality who has completed 12 years (or more) of primary and secondary education and at least two full academic years (4 semesters) in a degree program at a four-year university or in an equivalent Bachelor’s degree program outside of Korea. Transfer students will be admitted as junior (third-year) students.
- In the case of two or three-year colleges, only those applicants who have graduated (or are expected to graduate) can apply as a transfer student.
- Nationality is assessed at the time of the application.
- Korean citizens who hold dual citizenship are ineligible to apply as international students.
Applicants (and their parents) of Korean origin must submit documents to verify their loss of Korean nationality. - In a case where an applicant’s parents are divorced, the applicant’s nationality eligibility is determined by the nationality of the legal father or mother.
- Foreign applicants who wish to apply as freshman can only apply up to six times within a year for nonscheduled admissions, including all types of admissions to all universities in Korea.
- Applications in violation of this limit will be cancelled and admission offers will be forfeited. (Exceptions are made for applicants with two parents of non-Korean nationality).
B. Language Proficiency Requirements (for both freshman and transfer students)
Students must meet one of the following requirements to apply certificate from the Korean Language Program at Korea University
- A certificate of the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK)
- Certificate of Korean proficiency (other than 1 and 2) test score
- A standardized English proficiency test score on one of the following Tests: TOEFL, TEPS, IELTS (note: TOEIC is not accepted)
- Exceptions are made for applicants whose language proficiency meet qualifications 1 through 4 or those who are native speakers of Korean or English.
※ Admitted applicants who have not achieved Level 4 or above in the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) at the time of their admission must fulfill the requirement before graduation.

A. Mandatory Documents
- Certificate of Language Proficiency
- All applicants must submit one or more of the following documents
- Certificate from Korean Language and Culture Center at Korea University
- Certificate in Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK)
- Certificate of Korean Proficiency (other than A and B) Test Score
- Official score report of an English proficiency test (TOEFL, TEPS, or IELTS)
- Certificate or score report other than but equivalent to A through D above
- Native speakers of Korean or English may submit the high school transcript instead of the documents above.
B. Optional Documents
The applicant must submit authenticating documents if the applicant himself or his parents renounced/have lost Korean nationality. → The fact of the loss of Korean Nationality has to be specified on the document. (Family Relation Certificate, Proof of the Loss of Korean Nationality, Family Census Register, etc.)
